CSU Outlook: 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season Predicted to Be Among Most Active Ever

The Colorado State University's tropical meteorology project team has issued its first outlook for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, forecasting it to be one of the most active on record. They predict a total of 23 storms, 11 of which could become hurricanes, with five reaching Category 3 status or stronger. This forecast is notably higher than the 30-year average, indicating a potentially severe season ahead.

Two key factors are contributing to this outlook: the Atlantic Ocean's record warmth and the transition of El Niño to La Niña. The warm ocean temperatures provide ideal conditions for hurricane formation, while La Niña tends to decrease wind shear and promote the development of storms.
