September is Suicide Prevention Month

September marks National Suicide Prevention Month – a month to remember the lives lost to suicide, the millions of people who have struggled with suicidal ideation, and acknowledge the individuals, families, and communities that have been impacted. It is also a time to raise awareness about suicide prevention and share messages of hope.

In 2021, more than 48,000 Americans were lost to suicide, over 12.3 million adults seriously considered suicide, and 1.7 million people attempted suicide.  Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth and young adults between the ages of 10 and 24 years old, and the suicide rate for veterans was more than 50 percent greater than for non-veteran adults.  Yet despite the fact that so many Americans struggle with their mental health, treatment is often too expensive or inaccessible.

Everyone has a role to play in preventing suicide.  For instance, support groups and faith communities can work to prevent suicide simply by helping people navigate the struggles of life to find a sustainable sense of hope, meaning, and purpose in addition to encouraging individuals to engage in behavioral health care.
